The Minister of Finance Papakonstantinou said on Friday that will soon submit to the parliament a draft law that will license electronic entertainment machines and that will ban illegal internet betting. Particularly for the latter the Minister said that internet betting is uncontrollable and untaxed, while sources claim that the government is likely to forbid the use of credit cards from the players.
In other news, the European Court of Justice (ECJ) prosecutor Mengozzi stated last week that the gaming licenses that have been issued in an EU member country do not mean that they are also applicable in other EU members. He also mentioned that the court has to allow such limitations on betting as long as they are in favor of the social interest. The comments are positive for OPAP and strengthen the government’s plans to ban transactions of internet betting firms that illegally offer their services in Greece.
