Pavlopoulos: Invasion of Normandy teaches us the duty to defend Europe

“The anniversary of the Invasion of Normandy (D-Day) teaches us the duty to defend the European edifice from enemies of all kinds, who are trying to demolish it,” President of the Hellenic Republic Prokopios Pavlopoulos said in Portsmouth on Wednesday, where he is attending the events for the 75th Anniversary of Allied Forces’ landing in Normandy.

Referring to current threats and enemies of the European idea, Pavlopoulos stressed: “They will not pass. We will not allow them to hamper European integration, we will not allow them to threaten the European Republic and European civilisation.”

At the same time, he described the Invasion of Normandy as historic, noting that it was an achievement arising through the close cooperation of the European peoples craving freedom and democracy with the United States of America.

“This collaboration is timely and necessary if we consider what is happening today on the planet. Through it, we must once again defend peace, freedom and democracy all over the world. And each side assumes its responsibilities towards this historic debt,” the President of the Republic stressed.
