North Macedonia: Prespes Agreement comes into effect

North Macedonia: Prespes Agreement comes into effect

Following the note verbale Greece sent earlier on Tuesday, formally notifying Skopje that the Hellenic Parliament has completed the procedures for the ratification of the Prespes Agreement and the NATO accession protocol, Skopje announced late on Tuesday that the Prespes Agreement comes into effect as of 12 February.

The same holds true for the four amendments to the constitution voted by the country’s parliament on January 11, the announcement continued.

Both decisions have been published in the Government Gazette, practically changing the name of the country to “Republic of North Macedonia”.

The announcement was posted on the government’s official website (www.vlada.mk), where the country’s logo has been changed to “Republic of North Macedonia – Government of the Republic of North Macedonia”.

North Macedonia Foreign Minister Nikola Dimitrov posted on Tuesday evening the following message on his Twitter account, announcing the implementation of the Prespes Agreement:

“We have just exchanged the final note verbale: Prespa Agreement enters into force!” Dimitrov wrote and continued: “May today be the beginning of a long friendship between Greece and North Macedonia. We can’t change our past, but we can and we will shape our future of friendship, partnership and cooperation.”

Meanwhile, according to information reported by the German News Agency DPA, the Norway-based award committee announced on Tuesday that over 300 nominations have been made for the 2019 Nobel Peace Prize among which are the prime ministers of Greece and North Macedonia, Alexis Tsipras and Zoran Zaev.

Furthermore, DPA explains that the two leaders have been nominated by party groups in the European Parliament for their agreement to end a long-running dispute over Macedonia’s name, at the initiative of Ouided Bouchamaoui, an economist and member of the Tunisian National Dialogue Quartet who won the 2015 peace prize.
