Achtsioglou: Government fully ready to ensure compliance with higher basic wage

The labour ministry and the Labour Inspectorate are fully prepared to ensure compliance with the recently increased minimum wage, Labour Minister Effie Achtsioglou said on Wednesday, during a press conference with Deputy Labour Minister Nasos Iliopoulos on the actions taken to reduce unemployment and combat labour law violations.

“We are fully ready at the labour ministry and the Labour Inspectorate to check that the new increased minimum wage is upheld with a specific plan and instruments,” she said.

“As of February 1, 2019 the new increased minimum wage applies, which is increased by 11 pct, without discrimination according to age,” the minister noted, adding that the basic wage was now 650 euros for all employees, regardless of their age.

Achtsioglou said that the raise had increased the incomes of 600,000 employees, by up to 27 pct for those aged under 24, as well as another 280,000 people receiving benefits that were linked to the basic wage, such as unemployment and maternity benefits.
